Sara Caswell

Child Psychotherapist and Adult Psychotherapeutic Counsellor

Space to be heard, understood and supported.

I’m Sara Caswell, a UKCP and MBACP registered child and adult psychotherapist based in Harrogate and York. I offer warm, confidential in-person psychotherapy for children, adolescents and adults experiencing emotional difficulties, relationship issues and life transitions. I work with children, young people and adults who may be feeling anxious, low, overwhelmed, stuck or confused about what’s happening in their lives. This can include difficulties at school or work, family or relationship issues, loss and bereavement, low self-esteem, stress, and the impact of past experiences.

I work in a warm, creative and client-centred way, getting to know each person/child. We form a trusting relationship where they feel known, accepted, valued and safe so they can explore the feelings, thoughts and experiences they may have been struggling with. This helps them cope with their emotions, raises self esteem & improves their sense of wellbeing.

My Services

Who I work with

I offer individual, in-person psychotherapy for children, adolescents and adults. Therapy can be short-term and focused around a particular issue, or longer-term where there is a wish to explore things in more depth.

Fees & practicalities

Session fee: £80

Session length: 50 minutes

Format: In-person sessions only (I do not currently offer online therapy)

Location: Harrogate

Sessions usually take place once a week at the same time each week. We will agree together whether it feels helpful to work for a set number of sessions or on an open-ended basis, and review this regularly.

I operate a standard cancellation policy, which I will explain fully when we arrange to work together.

Children (approx. 4+)

For children, therapy often involves play, drawing and creative activities as well as talking. These can help children express thoughts and feelings that may be difficult to put into words.

I work with children who may be experiencing:

  • Anxiety, worry or fears

  • Difficulties at school or with friendships

  • Changes at home (such as separation, new siblings or moves)

  • Loss, bereavement or illness in the family

  • Emotional or behavioural changes that feel hard to understand

Adolescents and young adults

The teenage and young adult years can be a time of intense change and pressure. Therapy offers a confidential space to talk about what is going on without judgement.

I work with young people who may be struggling with:

  • Low mood, anxiety and stress

  • Exam, school, university or work pressure

  • Family and relationship difficulties

  • Self-esteem and identity

  • The impact of past experiences or trauma

Adults

For adults, therapy can be a place to explore recurring patterns, longstanding difficulties or current challenges that feel hard to manage alone.

People come to see me for many reasons, including:

  • Anxiety, low mood or feeling overwhelmed

  • Relationship and family difficulties

  • Work-related stress or burnout

  • Loss, change and life transitions

  • The impact of earlier experiences that continue to affect life now

How I work

Working with children and young people

When working with children, I use play and creative methods alongside talking. With adolescents and young adults, therapy is often more talk-based but still sensitive to the need for different ways of expressing feelings and experiences.

For younger children, parent or carer involvement is an important part of the work. We will discuss how and when we meet together, while also maintaining the child’s own confidential space in sessions.

What to expect

Initial contact

You are welcome to contact me by email or phone to outline what you are looking for. We can arrange an initial consultation in Harrogate or York.

  1. Assessment sessions

The first one or two sessions are an opportunity for us to think together about your situation, background and what you hope for from therapy. For children, this may involve meeting with parents or carers as well.

  2. Ongoing therapy

If we decide to work together, we will agree a regular weekly time for sessions. We can work for a set period or in an open-ended way, depending on what feels most appropriate.

  3. Review and ending

We will review our work periodically and think carefully about endings. This includes reflecting on what has changed and how you might continue to look after yourself beyond therapy.

FAQs

Blue question mark on a pink background.

Is what I say in sessions confidential?

Yes. What you share in sessions is treated as confidential within the limits of professional ethics and safeguarding. There are rare situations in which I may need to break confidentiality to keep you or someone else safe. I will always explain these limits clearly and, wherever possible, discuss any concerns with you

Do I need a referral from my GP?

No. You can contact me directly to arrange an initial consultation. If you are already in contact with other professionals, we can consider together whether it might be helpful for me to liaise with them, with your consent

Can you work with my child without me being present?

For children and adolescents, I usually meet with parents or carers at the beginning to gather background information and think about what will be most helpful. After that, I generally see the child or young person on their own, while maintaining appropriate contact with parents or carers and keeping the young person’s confidentiality in mind

How many sessions will I need?

This varies from person to person. Some people come for a short period of focused work; others find longer-term therapy helpful. We can discuss what you feel you need and review this together as we go.

Do you offer online sessions?

I currently offer in-person sessions only for children, and online or face to face for adult in Harrogate. If you are uncertain about travelling to sessions, we can discuss what is possible.

What if I’m not sure therapy is right for me?

It is completely normal to feel unsure. The initial consultation is a chance for us to think about your concerns, ask questions and decide together whether working with me feels like a good fit.
